The gerbera breeder Florist de Kwakel (Netherlands) and the carnation breeders Albani E Ruiggieri (Italy), Barberet & Blanc (Spain), HilverdaKooij (Netherlands), Hybrida (Italy), La Villetta (Italy) and Selecta Klemm (Germany) are working together to reduce unauthorized propagation in Turkey.
During the past five years, the breeders explained to growers the necessity of buying legal cuttings and paying royalty. Also importers of flowers of Turkish origin have been informed about the illegal importation of Turkish flowers. Although several Turkish growers buy legal cuttings, unfortunately many of the growers keep on multiplying cuttings without royalty payment. The breeders decided to take more drastic measures to the growers who do not pay royalty, because it is very important to prevent future illegal import of flowers into the European community. By using an EU anti-piracy law, breeders can take action at the EU borders, as in Bulgaria. The confiscated flowers are destroyed and a few growers who refused to accept a deal will be sued in Bulgaria.
Breeding new varieties is very important for the development of new and better varieties. For a breeder the royalty is the only income to cover the costs of the research investment. It is not acceptable that certain growers do not pay royalty and it is also not acceptable for the reliable growers.
